Much of Beckenham sits on clay-heavy ground, which swells in wet weather and shrinks back in dry spells. A surface laid straight onto poorly prepared ground will move with it, and that movement is what causes sunken block paving and cracked tarmac a few years down the line. We excavate to the depth the site actually needs, lay and compact a graded sub-base, and only then bring in the finishing surface.

Mature trees are another consideration on the older roads around Beckenham and Park Langley. We check for roots before we dig and adjust the build up where required, so the drive is not lifted from underneath a season or two later. It is the part of the job nobody sees, and it is the part that decides how long your driveway lasts.

Each material suits a different type of property, budget and level of use. Tarmac is the most economical choice for larger drives and copes well with daily vehicle traffic. Block paving allows for borders, patterns and simple repairs, since individual blocks can be lifted and reset without disturbing the rest of the surface.

Resin bound gives a smooth, gravel-look finish that drains freely and stays tidy with very little effort. Loose gravel remains the cheapest option and works well on longer approaches, though it does need topping up now and then. Since 2008, a front driveway larger than five square metres has needed planning permission unless the surface is permeable or the water drains to a soakaway within your own boundary. Resin bound and permeable block paving both satisfy this. For tarmac and gravel drives, we can add channel drainage or a soakaway so the finished surface stays compliant and your rainwater does not end up in the road.

A properly built drive asks very little of you. Block paving benefits from a wash and fresh kiln dried sand brushed into the joints every couple of years, along with a sealant if you want to keep the colour strong. Tarmac should be kept clear of standing oil and can be resealed in time to protect the surface against weathering.
